DESIGN FOR ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING ASSIGNMENT 1
Title: AM Portfolio
Aims:
You will create a portfolio of exercises over the course of the programme. This portfolio will be a pass or fail only assessment and you must complete all activities to pass. The topics will be given out as they are covered in the lessons and will contain tasks such as critical evaluation of technologies versus product and production types, audit an additive manufacturing facility with regards to commercial constraints and a material selection exercise.
Introduction:
Produce a portfolio of or equivalent to 3500 words in which you critically reflect on AM activities. Your portfolio activities are:
Task 1
AM is not a valid solution for all products. Your task is simple. Find a part, picture it and present what makes it a good AM candidate.
The key information we need to know is:
What is the part?
What material and manufacturing method is it currently?
What AM process will you use?
Why?
What cost per part do you expect?
What volume?
How many builds to meet rate?
What additional cost or weight savings could you estimate?
Task 2
Choose 2 methods of AM and critically analyze their performance against each other recommending reasons for using one over the other.
Critical analysis of 2 AM methods, much more than show me 2 processes.
Task 3
The part should be optimizes using solid works
Critically appraise an optimization task and research the options for optimization in an industrial setting.
Do and then critically appraise an optimization task and show consideration for that task in an industrial context.
Task 4
Critically analyze a part and recommend the optimum build orientation for a chosen AM manufacturing method
Prepare a part and place it in a “printable” orientation and analyze areas for their effectiveness, consider cost, time etc.
Minimum Secondary Research Source Requirements: Level HE7
As a minimum the Reference List should include a total of fifteen to twenty sources across academic books and refereed academic journals.
Assessment:
The marks for this assignment will contribute 0% of the module but an appropriate attempt must be made at each task and the portfolio submission to be considered a pass. The tasks will be covered for feedback throughout to support the 2nd assessment and the overall module mark.
General Considerations:
The assignment involves some research, understanding and evaluating the research and producing a coherent presentation. Much of this information is available on the internet, however students should AVOID the temptation of “cutting and pasting” directly from the Internet, and then placing it in their presentation WITHOUT having the courtesy of acknowledging that the information in the appropriate manner using the Harvard or similar methods. The Harvard Referencing system is explained through the research link contained in BISSTO-LEAP and explained in the publication Cite Me I’m Yours (Harvard style).
