• A once off initiative and not business as usual
• They exist in order to improve an organisations
capabilities
• Has constraints such as time, cost, quality and
scope – known as the Project Management triangle
• Every project is unique with different variables

Project management is the application of processes,
methods, skills, knowledge and experience to
achieve specific project objectives for change”. APM

What is the role of the project manager?
The project manager has primary responsibility
for providing leadership in planning, organising,
monitoring and controlling the work effort to
accomplish the project objective. In other
words, the project manager provides leadership
to the project team to accomplish the project

Assessment (Task 1 – The Project Manager– 12 marks)
For your assignment you will act in the role of a Project Consultant where you are required to develop a project
report for the Smart City OS project (case study provided) by leveraging on the techniques and concepts you
have covered in the module.
Task 1 (LO3):
Critically discuss what skills the project manager of the Smart City OS project needs to develop to be
effective and reflect on possible actions the project manager of the Smart City OS project should take to
develop those skills. Support your arguments with academic literature and references to other similar
real projects

Apply the learning from the watching/reading above by engaging with these questions and answering and
discussing them within the discussion forum.
