Describe a real-life scenario detailing the root causes and outcomes of conflict.

I know that a real-life scenario that I have faced is when there is a change in leadership within an organization. For instance, the organization that I am currently with had a change in the Director of Operations. Within months of this new person taking the reins, the business lost three unit managers and had to shutter a unit due to the resignation of the entire team. The organization also demoted another business manager, and a current team leader has submitted their resignation. We actually sat down as the corporate operations team to brainstorm what the issue was amongst the team.
Majority of the root causes I believe were intrapersonal. One, people do not like change, we are naturally creatures of habit. Anytime there is a change in procedure or process people can fight against it instead of embracing it. Two, there was a change in expectations. I noticed that many of the resignations were because people did not feel like they could perform at the level that was expected of them. Instead of reaching out for help and development they thought it would be easier to walk away from the organization. I do think there was an interpersonal root cause. The old director of operations had a very hands off management style. She only reached out to the team when something went wrong or during the monthly check-ins. People got used to this style and the freedom that it gave them. The new director of operations talked to each business head at least once a week and was always emailing the team with information. This could have caused the team to feel like they were being watched unreasonably. I remember one person even saying, “I didn’t have to do this much before”.

Recall a specific instance when you experienced significant change at work.
What was the overall outcome?

My opinion on what causes organizations to change is that companies must change to keep up with the latest trends and technology. At the company that I am employed with, they added an entirely new department to keep up with the digital overnight orders to satisfy our eager consumers. A potential consequence of resistance to change is profit loss and there’s a possibility that it could change the culture of the organization. The most significant change at most workplaces came in 2020 when the Coronavirus pandemic started. Organizations had to make several safety precautions to keep the workers, themselves, and the consumers during this time. Although it took some getting used to, everyone has adapted and has been following the proper protocols to keep everyone safe.
