Problems and issues impacting client
The case study revolves around a person named John who is 17 years old and is a male African American heterosexual belonging to a poor family. He has been living in the group home for three years because he suffers from schizophrenia paranoia. He hears good and bad voices. . John is so mentally imbalanced that when anybody else around him talks in a low voice, he considers them to be plotting against him. John must be strictly supervised so that the staff can act immediately when they recognize that he has been triggered. The methods used to calm him down is to allow him to listen to music, give him space and wait for him to be receptive to taking his medication. He has faced several social prejudices and has been discriminated against for which he has faced Schizophrenia.
John is involved in a work study program at his high school. It teaches him how to work with others in society. It is designed to assist him in becoming acclimated to becoming functioning, independent individual. Unfortunately, John must leave the group home 6 months after he turns 18 years old. He is putting up resistance from leaving the group home and his attempted to be retained in the 12th grade. The supervisor has explained to him that he would still have to leave because of his age. Fortunately, they have found have located an adult group home for him to reside. The staff had to assist him in preparing and submitting his paperwork at the Haymount Institute for disability. This allowed him to be eligible to live in the adult group home and to be considered disable. He will not be allowed to work in the community. Also, two of the staff from the current group home, work at the adult group home. Hopefully, this will make the transition seamless.
Person Centered Therapy & Social Learning Therapy
Person Centered therapy focuses on the individual as a whole and it is a positive approach when dealing with current issues. The goal of person-centered therapy is to teach the individual how to focus on the positives of a situation and to teach coping skills. Once we identify that John is triggered, we immediately begin to implement techniques to calm him down. According to the case study, John is schizophrenic as he has been abused in his childhood. Also, we use the social learning theory. It is one of the most used and most effective theories as it involves the learning process and social behavior acquired from his environments. This can only be done through imitating as well as observing others. It is expected that social learning theory it could be to a great extent addressed effectively (Rumjaun & Narod, 2020). This theory has suggested the social behavior of others and limiting the behavior of others.
This is the most effective one since this involves learning and driving motivation for the concerned person from its social surroundings. It is expected that the people around him could influence him in getting into normal life and daily courses. This in turn would help John in getting accustomed to people and slowly forget his past abuses. With this, the difference in John’s behavior could be understood and help the caregiver to understand the issue he is facing. Once John to be in normal interaction with the people his behavior could be mended through social learning as this is one of the most effective manners.
The social policy that could be taken into consideration is the anti-discrimination policies which ensure a person that they feel safe, comfortable, and confident at work. The Equality Act 2010 helps safeguard the rights of people. This policy has severe impacts on the client and the population based on social, economic, and environmental issues. With the application of the concerned policy, the social issue of discriminatory practices against the concerned person could be eliminated and by providing knowledge about the policy his confidence and his rights could be delivered to him. It is expected that this would help in making John understand his rights and safeguarding policy (jigsawtrust.co.uk, 2022). Also, economic bias or prejudice could be addressed effectively. John’s fear of society and bias fear could be effectively eliminated.
Macro practice skills primarily involve teaching basic communication skills. With the application of the concerned skill, the caregivers would assist in providing John with community-based education and communication and teach him basic communication skills. This involves teaching him how to express his feelings without getting angry. Another goal is to help him build his confidence. We want him to not become triggered when he sees a group talking amongst themselves.
Mezzo practice skills are all about the development and the implementation of the social service initiative for the community. Most importantly these are the skills that would directly socialize them and get them to make them understand the policies safeguarding his rights so that he regains confidence in his approach towards living a normal life (Wakschlag et al., 2019).
Micro practice skills involve providing knowledge about speaking, listening with patience, reading and writing. In this, the community should be the prime focus of the social anti-oppressive policies reflecting the feelings and improved body language through confidence.
All of these could be made possible with the application of the Equality Act which makes sure that the caregiver would ensure to provide every necessary assistance to the concerned person. These practices are made unbiased and effective with the policy application.
Communication therapeutic relationship
The therapeutic communication has the potency of enhancing the knowledge of the patient and developing well understanding for enhancing the self-health skills and trust for providing comfort and engaging in the management of the key emotions for the well-being of the patients. This is the most essential in this case with the help of the John could be provided with effective training and assistance of communication and addressing the mental process (Ct Fatimah, 2014). This involves understanding the illness and eliminating the fear of the person for understanding the patient’s key areas of drawback. With this effective verbal and non-verbal communication could be provided that would contribute to the good therapeutics’ relationship, which helps emotional wellbeing. This forms an important part of nurse-patient interaction providing care in a manner.
National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics
As per NASW the code of ethics is a set of standards that guides social workers in their professional conduct. The purpose of the concerned policy is that it has an obligation to ethical principles, ethical standards along with articulating the basic values. This code of ethics was designed for helping the social workers identify the relevant considerations when ethical uncertainties and professional obligations arise (National Association of Social Workers, 2021). This could be put to application in the concerned process because it would help John to achieve tangible service with necessary counseling therapies and psychotherapy to bring in improvement in the social approach of the person.
