Overview of the Paper

This paper has three goals. First, it will provide you with an
opportunity to reflect upon and integrate readings and in-class
activities that you have completed during the quarter. Second, the
paper provides an opportunity for you to investigate the ways that the
themes that have been addressed in the class thus far affect your own
thinking. Third, the paper will encourage you to imagine ways your own
professional practice to promote a just and equitable future (for the
children, youth, other populations with whom you may work).

Part 1: Big Ideas and Themes.

Review all of the readings (includes text chapters, assigned book
chapters, articles, videos, podcasts) from the last ten weeks. Pick 10
readings/videos/podcasts {no more than three multimedia (this includes
videos and podcasts} from this list that you
found particularly meaningful for your growth relative to the learning
objectives from this class (see course syllabus for learning
objectives). For each reading, write one or two sentences or a brief
paragraph that expresses the main points, Big Ideas or “take-away” from
the reading. Use the Table 1 to organize your writing. Sample Table 1.docx (this is uploaded)

Part 2: Reflecting on your own thinking

Write a brief essay (3-5 paragraphs) to interrogate your thinking. Consider this question:

A recurrent theme in BEDUC 210 is the idea that interconnected
systems of power and privilege create injustice and inequity in the
lives of many people. As you think back on the quarter, what are the
experiences, ideas or learnings that most affected your thinking about
systems of power and privilege? Discuss how and why these experiences
affected you the way they did.

Part 3: Your Practice as an Act of Radical Imagination

The term “radical” refers to movements, perspectives, or approaches
that sees social problems as unsolvable within current political or
economic systems. Radical implies systemic change. The term
“imagination” refers to the process of calling something that is not yet
fully present into being. Radical imagination involves the process of
imagining systemic social changes to bring about a set of conditions
that currently do not exist. Often, radical imagination involves
collaborative or collective action. Write a brief essay (3-5
paragraphs) that frames your own professional practice as an act of
radical imagination. Consider these questions:

How do you see yourself working in community with others to bring about systemic change that addresses systems of oppression?
How do the readings and activities this quarter inform your thinking?
How does the evidence from readings, experiences, ideas you discussed in Part 2 inform your thinking?
As you think about working collectively or collaboratively with
others, how do the ideas discussed in the Bettez and Hytten (2013)
article influence your thinking?

Formatting and submission

Please use APA formatting for all in-text citations. If you use any
references that are outside of the class readings list, you must cite
the references in a References List at the end of the paper.
You may copy and paste Table 1 directly into your paper to organize
your work in Part 1. You do not need to include the references in Table 1
in a reference list (given that these references are from the class
readings list).
Papers will be evaluated using a rubric that addresses these elements:
Coherence and clarity of writing
Completion of all components of the assignment
Effective use of evidence obtained from readings and class discussions
Extent to which the writing in this project is grounded in the ideas and goals of BEDUC 210.
